The scheme was debated and criticized even before it came into effect. Now is the time for anyone who wants to apply for the new electric car premium.

Who is the premium aimed at?

It is aimed especially at households in rural areas with incomes lower than the average. However, there are specific rules that apply.

For example?

First of all, you must live in one of the country's 177 rural municipalities or areas with limited public transport. The total household income must be no more than 80 percent of the average income in Sweden. No one in the household may have an income high enough to be subject to state income tax.

How do I know if I am eligible or not?

Via the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency's website you can enter your address to see whether your area is covered.

What type of electric cars are we talking about?

Both new and used electric cars. The purchase price must be between 64,800 and 450,000 SEK. When leasing, the monthly cost must be between 1,800 and 4,600 SEK.

How much can I get?

You will receive SEK 1,300 per month for a maximum of 36 months, which is equal to SEK 46,800 for the entire period. In addition, you can receive an extra starting grant of SEK 18,000 if the household has less than 50 percent of the average income.

How do I apply?

Applications are submitted digitally via the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency's e-service and must include information about the household's finances, residential address and the vehicle.

Can I apply after I have bought my car?

Yes, up to two months after purchase. However, the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency recommends applying before purchase to be guaranteed the premium. After the announcement, you have four months to buy or lease the electric car.

How urgent is the application?

The premium can be applied for between March 18 and June 30, 2028. After that, the premium will be reduced, but you can continue to apply until June 30, 2029. The budget is estimated to be enough for approximately 115,000 households.
