Donald Trump has made an executive decision to rename the lake, in light of an escalating trade war with neighboring Canada.
The other day, Google Maps started showing the name “Lake America” for users in the US, and now Apple has made the same change. However, anyone looking at the same map in Canada will still see “Lake Ontario” or the French “Lac Ontario.”
The national border cuts straight through Lake Ontario.
Trump's decision applies to the United States and does not necessarily affect how the lake is referred to in other countries or languages. When searching for Lake Ontario on Google in Sweden, the new American name is now in parentheses.
