Stina Källberg Wins European Championship Medal, Then Loses in Singles First Round

Earlier in the day, Stina Källberg secured a medal in mixed doubles. Later that evening, she went straight into the singles tournament. “It feels tough,” she told SVT after her loss at the European Table Tennis Championships.

When Stina Källberg and Kristian Karlsson qualified for the mixed doubles semifinals, Sweden secured its first medal at the European Championships in Slovenia, as there are no bronze medal matches.

I’ve really been longing for this medal. It feels so damn good, Källberg told SVT after the quarterfinal victory.

Later on Wednesday evening, the 26-year-old suffered a tough loss. Romanian Adina Diaconu won a thrilling 4-3 match, ending Källberg’s singles tournament in the first round.

I had a feeling I would turn it around and win, but it was a close match and I didn’t succeed today, Källberg told SVT.

Big brother Anton Källberg also played a tough match, but managed to win 4–3 in sets against Russian Nikita Artamenko.

World number four Truls Möregårdh is also through to the second round after a clear 4–0 victory against Dutchman Ivan Kahn.

Kristian Karlsson and Elias Ranefur also won their first-round matches.

No Swedish women remain in the singles tournament after Filippa Bergand also went out in the first round. She lost 2–4 in sets to Italian Gaia Monfardini.
