In 2000, Peter Karlsson won the European Championship gold medal. It remains Sweden’s most recent European Championship gold in singles.
Twenty-six years later, it may be time again.
But not for the big star Truls Möregårdh - for Anton Källberg.
The 29-year-old has previously won European Championship gold, Olympic silver and World Championship bronze - but all in team events. Now he has secured his first individual medal.
"I’m incredibly happy, of course. Really happy," Källberg tells SVT.
Källberg was down 4–9 in the first set against Dang Qiu, his clubmate for several years in Düsseldorf. But Källberg turned things around and won 11–9.
Dang Qiu then took two straight sets (11–9, 11–9) before Källberg took over - and he did it in style. He won the next three sets 11–8, 11–5 and 11–4.
"It’s clear that you’re floating on clouds now after this win. I have to try to calm myself down now."
In the final, which starts at 5:50 p.m. on Sunday, he will face top seed Félix Lebrun, who won the all-French match against the formidable Leo De Nodrest 4–2.
"Very difficult and tough, of course," Källberg says of facing Lebrun.
