The two-time world heavyweight boxing champion was in Nigeria visiting family when the car he was travelling in crashed into a stationary truck. Two men, Anthony Joshua's trainer and a close friend, were killed.
The Briton and another person were taken to a hospital, where they were treated for minor injuries. Both are being held for observation.
Nigerian President Bola Tinubu spoke to Joshua by phone and expressed his condolences over the two deaths.
"I wish him a full and speedy recovery. AJ assured me that he is receiving the best possible care. I have also spoken to his mother," the president wrote on X.
Just over a week ago, Joshua defeated influencer Jake Paul in a high-profile fight in Miami. Joshua is a two-time heavyweight world champion who, before turning professional, won Olympic gold in the super-heavyweight category at the 2012 London Games.
