"I am truly grateful for everything golf has given me and for the amazing people I have met along the way," she said in commenting on the decision.
Nordqvist made the unexpected announcement during the day.
She writes:
"20 years ago I left Sweden with two suitcases, a golf bag and a dream to one day compete with the best golfers in the world. My dreams may not have taken me this far, but I am incredibly proud of what I have achieved and grateful for the dream I have been able to live all these years."
This week's LPGA event in Boston will be Nordqvist's last. In two weeks, the 39-year-old will captain Team Europe in the Solheim Cup.
Nordqvist's career has been marked by health problems and personal setbacks.
"It really hasn't been an easy journey, especially since my family has been so far away, but they have always been there and supported me along the way. I have fallen so many times, but I never gave up and got back up every time."
The future, she points out, is uncertain.
"I don't know what lies ahead, but it is with great gratitude and a full heart that I have decided to end my career as a professional golfer to focus on my health and my family."

Main achievements: Has won three major titles - the LPGA Championship in 2009, the Evian Championship in 2017 and the British Open in 2021. This makes her Sweden's second most successful golfer of all time, after Annika Sörenstam.
Current status: Ending her career in connection with this week's LPGA Tour competition in Boston. Is captain of the European team in the Solheim Cup, which will be held in the Netherlands in two weeks.
