Some of the hundreds of protesters who gathered in the city, many masked, set fire to a bus and other vehicles, the BBC reports. Roads were also blocked and garbage cans were set on fire. In other cities, people have also joined anti-immigration protests.

A Sudanese man with refugee status was arrested on Monday on suspicion of attempting to murder another man. The attack was caught on video. The victim suffered injuries to his eyes, back and face after being stabbed multiple times.

The police and politicians have called for calm.

The suspected perpetrator came to the UK in 2023. He will appear before a judge on Wednesday.
