"Movie star George Clooney's French citizenship has been approved, but it is not welcomed by everyone. Personally, I understand the feeling of some French people about double standards," Marie-Pierre Vedrenne, the deputy interior minister, told France Info radio.

"We must be careful about what message we send," said Vedrenne, who belongs to the centrist Democratic Movement party and is a junior minister in President Emmanuel Macron's government.

The other day it became clear that the "Ocean's Eleven" actor and his family will receive French citizenship. This comes at the same time the language requirements for citizenship are tightened according to new immigration rules from January 1. For everyone else, the requirement is a certificate showing the language level needed to be admitted to a French university.

Clooney himself has admitted that his French is at a low level.

"I love French culture, your language, even though I'm still bad at it after 400 days of courses," he told RTL radio in December.

However, the French Foreign Ministry came to Clooney's defense, saying that he "contributes through his outstanding efforts to France's international influence and cultural prestige."
