The families who lost loved ones in the deadly fire in Crans-Montana, Switzerland, on New Year's Eve are furious that one of the bar managers has been released on bail.

A lawyer representing several families calls the release "a scandal and an insult to the victims and their families."

The man, who ran the bar with his wife, has been in custody since January 9, while his wife has been at large. They both risk being charged with manslaughter and causing bodily harm. However, the man must report to the police every day, as he is not allowed to leave Switzerland.

40 people died in the fire. Another 116 were injured.

Investigators believe the fire started when pyrotechnics attached to champagne bottles were raised towards the ceiling, causing the foam rubber soundproofing to catch fire.
