George Buzatu erected the statue on June 25, and since then nothing has been the same. The statue has become a tourist magnet.

"There are probably ten or fifteen people coming a day, there are children and the elderly, everyone is happy and wants to give me a hug," he says.

A draw

The statue has already had visitors from Denmark and Stockholm, but George Buzatu believes that word about the statue will spread to more countries.

According to SVT, the statue was part of the marketing campaign for the album "HIStory". The album was a double album with 15 of Michael Jackson's previous songs and 15 then brand-new ones. Before its release in 1995, nine giant statues depicting "The King of Pop" were made.

It is one of these statues that now stands in Ängelholm.

George Buzatu bought the statue a year ago, but it has been left until now. The reason for the purchase, he says, was that Michael Jackson's music saved him when things were at their darkest in life.

It makes me happy and I hope others will too, says George Buzatu.

Only positive reactions

But not everyone in the municipality is happy about the statue. It has been questioned partly because Michael Jackson was accused of child sexual abuse, and partly because some think it doesn't look much like the original.

"So far I have only received positive reactions, but if anyone wants to talk about the allegations with me, they are welcome. I am happy to answer them with facts," says George Buzatu, referring to Michael Jackson's acquittal.

He hopes and believes that the statue will remain standing forever.

I hope it becomes Ängelholm's own character.
