A few days ago, the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) confirmed that it was in talks with successful coach Pep Guardiola, who left Manchester City after last season, about becoming the new Italy coach. But now the 55-year-old has reportedly turned down the offer.

We are waiting for the person we really want, said Paolo Maldini, technical director at FIGC, at a press conference after a question about Guardiola.

Now the focus is on Andrea Pirlo as the new national team coach, several media outlets write.

Pirlo played 116 games for Italy as a player, and has previously coached Italian clubs Juventus and Sampdoria. He now coaches Dubai United in the United Arab Emirates.
