Security forces have been positioned on streets and rooftops, and have, on several occasions, used hunting rifles loaded with metal shot, according to the human rights organization.
The regime's internet shutdown has limited the flow of information, and reports of the death toll vary, but most organizations monitoring the situation report at least a few thousand dead.
Amnesty's eyewitnesses described overcrowded morgues and bodies even piled on top of each other in pickup trucks and shipping containers.
"Everyone who came in had terrible injuries from direct gunfire. It was clear that they were shooting with the intent to kill," a healthcare worker in Meshed told Amnesty.
