Hundreds of soldiers have reportedly been transferred from the US al-Udeid air base in Qatar and from US bases in Bahrain to carry out other operations and missions, according to the newspaper, citing US officials.
The moves come amid heightened tensions between Iran and the United States, as President Donald Trump seeks to pressure Iran to agree to a new deal on the country's nuclear program. At the same time, the United States has mobilized forces around Iran at an unprecedented pace in recent weeks.
Al-Udeid is the largest US base in the Middle East, with around 10,000 troops. The air base was attacked by Iran during the 12-day war against Israel in June.
Correction: An earlier version contained an incorrect statement attributed to The New York Times. The correct statement is that forces were moved due to other missions.
