Ames died in a Maryland prison on Monday, at age 84.
The CIA agent was responsible for one of the most damaging intelligence leaks in American history. He was arrested in 1994 and confessed to selling classified information to Moscow from 1985. He was sentenced to life in prison.
Ames is said to have revealed the identities of ten Russian officials and an Eastern European who spied for the US and Britain, and was indirectly blamed for the execution of several Western agents working behind the Iron Curtain, a major setback for the CIA during the Cold War.
Ames claimed to have acted for financial reasons. He said he received around $2.5 million from Moscow for the information.
