"Since this was such a major incident, with seven people seriously injured, seven ambulances would have been needed. That's quite a lot of resources," Fredrik Iwanson, an external commander at Södra Älvsborg's rescue service association, tells the newspaper.
The teenagers struggled to get out of the burning garage. They eventually managed to force a door open with help from people outside, according to an emergency report, BT writes.
After the fire was extinguished, firefighters had to assist the ambulance crew.
"It's a question of prioritization, which you make together with the healthcare system depending on the severity of the injuries. You assess with the healthcare system whether they can be transported in a vehicle other than an ambulance," Fredrik Iwanson tells BT.
All the injured were first taken to Södra Älvsborg Hospital in Borås. Three were then transferred elsewhere.
One of the teenagers was treated for life-threatening injuries at the Burn Center in Linköping on Saturday.
Two teenagers who were treated for minor injuries at Queen Silvia's Children's Hospital in Gothenburg were discharged on Sunday, Sahlgrenska's press service reported.
Of the four patients at the hospital in Borås, two were assessed as seriously injured on Saturday, but all were reported to be in stable condition.
