The regions already have tools to protect ambulance personnel from threats and violence – but they are not used by all. This is stated by Minister for Health Care Elisabet Lann (KD) after a meeting with the affected professional groups. I was very clear that the regions need to learn from each other and adopt good examples.

In September, a paramedic was killed on duty. Since then, the issue of threats and violence has been highlighted, among other things, regarding the staff's lack of information about who they are going to.

Elisabet Lann – who on Wednesday met with representatives from trade unions, emergency centers, regions, and police – believes that the lack of information is based on the fact that the regions make different interpretations of the legislation.

Several regions share important information that they consider the ambulance staff need – such as journals from psychiatry, from inpatient care, and from municipal health and medical care – while other regions do not do so, says the Minister of Health.

”Need to learn”

The fact that the exchange of information is lacking can be due to the fact that workplaces lack routines, equipment, and technology to introduce practical solutions for sharing information, according to Lann.

I was very clear that the regions need to learn from each other and take after good examples.

According to the Ambulance Association, it is a widespread problem that ambulance staff are sent to places where threats and violence can occur. They are demanding so-called "flagging" of addresses where there is a risk of threats and violence with the help of the police's crime and suspicion register.

Other solutions

But according to Lann, it is not "the most immediate solution" to the problem.

I do not rule out that we will look further into it and I do not rule out legislative changes. But at the meeting, it became clear that there is a lot of important information available today. These are also changes that we can implement now, without long processes and solutions far into the future.
