Ambulance staff in Västra Götaland county buy their own bulletproof vests after many have been affected by threats and violence, reports P4 Göteborg.

We need to have protective equipment just like those who work on a construction site have a helmet on and a harness when they are at high altitude, so we need to have equipment that can protect our safety, says Martin Hulldin, board member of The Nursing Association Västra Götaland.

According to a survey conducted by The Nursing Association in the region, a majority of ambulance drivers want to introduce protective vests in their work.

The discussion has previously been held in other regions as well. Region Uppsala was the first in the country to introduce bulletproof vests in the ambulance, reported the newspaper Arbetet in March 2024. In April this year, it was also introduced in Kalmar County, reported P4 Kalmar.

Last Saturday, a female ambulance nurse was killed during an emergency call in Harmånger, north of Hudiksvall.
