According to the plan for the gas plant, known as GW Ranch, it will have 35 turbines and generate 7.65 gigawatts - larger than any other currently operating in the United States.

The power plant, located in Pecos County, would be allowed to emit more than 30 million tons of greenhouse gases per year, more than any other single source in the country.

The facility is the latest example of how tech giants are beginning to disconnect from the traditional power grid to accelerate the development of their AI businesses.

By generating its own electricity, Amazon would avoid passing on high electricity costs to ordinary Americans, a spokesperson said:

Amazon believes in paying the full cost of running our business.
