The 21-year-old Eala won 3–6, 6–2, 6–0 against Maya Joint, the Australian who defeated comeback legend Serena Williams in the first round.
She created an electric atmosphere around court 3, where hundreds of Filipino spectators showed their support.
"It was amazing, it was electric, respectful and everything I could have hoped for. It feels good to share this with an entire nation, but most of all it makes me super proud considering all the work I put in," says Eala.
The next round will feature reigning champion and six-time Grand Slam winner Iga Swiatek of Poland, an opponent the 32nd-ranked Eala previously defeated in Miami last year.
