Alexandersson's Mistakes Cost Her Gold in Orienteering Final

Tove Alexandersson was on her way to yet another gold in the World Championship in orienteering in Kuopio, Finland. Instead, the Swedish star made two costly mistakes in the end and finished in second place in the long distance. I am so terribly disappointed with myself, says Alexandersson to SVT.

With that, Alexandersson missed touching the Swiss Simone Nigglis 23 World Championship golds, which is the best record of all time.

Alexandersson took two detours on the last controls and lost her grip on first place.

I'm so terribly disappointed in myself, that I don't manage to hold it together. I had to struggle today physically and mentally, says Alexandersson and continues:

I really tried to focus on the orienteering and on the controls, but what I do in the end, a big mistake and one smaller, right now it's just empty.

Instead, Simona Aebersold from Switzerland won – just nine seconds ahead of Alexandersson.

Norwegian Andrine Benjaminsen came in third.
