Alexander Zverev Loses First Match as World No. 1 at Paris Masters

Alexander Zverev's time as the world's top-ranked tennis player got off to a rocky start. The German lost his opening match and became only the fifth men's player to do so after reaching No. 1.

Alexander Zverev lost in straight sets to Italian Lorenzo Musetti at the Paris Masters. He became only the fifth player on the men’s side to lose his first match after becoming world No. 1. John McEnroe, Thomas Muster, Lleyton Hewitt and Carlos Alcaraz had previously achieved that “feat”.

But Zverev stressed that the loss was not due to the increased pressure of being world No. 1.

“It was not a good match from my side. It may have been one of the worst in recent months,” he said afterwards.

The ATP rankings were introduced in 1973.
