Alexander Isak started up front along with Hugo Ekitiké, who was forced to leave the Anfield pitch on a stretcher after half an hour.

The Frenchman was about to take a few steps forward to meet a challenge, but collapsed without close contact from any opponent and landed on one foot.

For Isak, it was the first time he had started a football match since he broke his fibula and injured his ankle during a league match on December 20th.

Played one half

His first minutes on the pitch since the injury came as a substitute away to PSG last week, and the 26-year-old also came on in Saturday's Premier League match at home against Fulham.

In the return match, he didn't get many balls to work with as Liverpool tried to overturn a 0-2 deficit from the match in Paris - Isak played during the first half. He was substituted when the second half got underway.

With barely 20 minutes left to play, Liverpool's hopes of progressing in the Champions League were extinguished.

Frenchman Ousmane Dembélé - named the world's best men's player last year - had to twist and turn outside the penalty area before he definitively secured the reigning champions' place in this year's semi-finals with his goal from distance. In added time, Dembélé also made it 2-0.

Barcelona eliminated

Catalan giants Barcelona had the same starting position as Liverpool away to Atlético Madrid, but after 24 minutes of play in the Spanish capital, the 0–2 deficit had been overturned after goals from Lamine Yamal and Ferran Torres.

After just over half an hour, Atlético Madrid were once again a semi-final team when Ademola Lookman scored the equalizer. The goal took Atlético through to the semi-finals with a 3–2 aggregate win.

Swedish national team player Roony Bardghji was substituted in the 89th minute for Barcelona.
