The national team star Alexander Isak's future has been European football's big saga this summer, but now all speculation is over.
The Swede is leaving Newcastle for the reigning Premier League champion Liverpool, the club reports on social media at 22:29 on Monday, Swedish time. It was two and a half hours after the transfer window closed in England.
"I'm super happy to be a part of this team, the club and everything it stands for. It's something I'm very proud of," Isak says to Liverpool's website.
Setting records
The transfer sum is believed to be around 130 million pounds (approximately 1.66 billion kronor), according to the usually well-informed Italian football journalist Fabrizio Romano.
When Isak was presented by Liverpool, Newcastle released a brief statement on their website confirming that the striker had been sold for a sum that constitutes a "British transfer record". The price tag also makes Isak the most expensive Swedish football player of all time.
"I'm just happy that it's done so I can start working again. I look forward to meeting my teammates, supporters, and playing again," he says.
Isak traveled to Sweden on Monday evening for the national team gathering for World Championship qualification matches against Slovenia and Kosovo.
Isak has not been selected for any of Newcastle's three opening Premier League matches, and the Swede has refused to train with the club during the summer.
In mid-August, Isak broke his silence on Instagram. He then claimed that he had been promised a transfer in the summer.
"When promises are broken, trust disappears, the relationship cannot continue," he wrote, among other things.
Newcastle denied a few hours later that they had promised the player anything and said they were disappointed in Alexander Isak.
Second in the scoring league
The Swede has scored a total of 62 goals in 109 matches for Newcastle during his three seasons with the club.
With 23 goals, Isak finished second in the Premier League's scoring league last season, and he played a crucial role when Newcastle won the club's first domestic title in 70 years in March. He then scored the decisive goal in the league cup final against Liverpool at Wembley.
A club he now belongs to. His debut in the Liverpool jersey with number nine on his back can take place away against Burnley on September 14 in Premier League football.
"I think I have a lot to contribute, I think I have a lot to improve. I'm a striker, but I always want to give as much as possible to the team, primarily goals, but much more than that too. I want to win everything," he says.
