After the last game of the past season, and the last one on his then-current contract, the ice hockey star announced that he had not decided whether he would continue playing or not.
Now it is clear that he will play for at least another year.
"Thank you to everyone who has given me and my family time to make this decision. I am healthy. I love playing hockey and competing to win," says the forward.
Ovechkin's contract is worth a total of almost 90 million kronor if he plays at least ten games. The Russian turns 41 in September.
Ovechkin is the NHL's leading scorer with 929 goals, for a total of 1,687 points in 1,573 NHL games.
