Albanian Prime Minister Rama Calls for Calm After Violent Student Protests in Tirana

Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama is calling for calm after several days of violent anti-government protests - and at the same time blaming the tense situation on “foreign forces.”

Since Tuesday, widespread student protests have taken place in the streets of Albania's capital, Tirana.

Thousands of students have called for the prime minister's resignation over high tuition fees and poor conditions at universities.

The police have clashed with protesters and used both water cannons and tear gas.

"We are not criminals. We just want a better life than our parents, and we don't want to leave Albania," 18-year-old Ledia told AFP.

Students have joined forces with various anti-government groups in protests over a range of social issues in recent months. A construction project involving Jared Kushner, the son-in-law of US President Donald Trump, has sparked particular anger.
