Åkesson Criticizes TV4's Kalla Fakta Investigation as Propaganda

The Sweden Democrats' party leader Jimmie Åkesson launches a new attack on TV4's Kalla fakta in Ekot's Saturday interview. The worst propaganda minister in Nazi Germany would probably be proud of this propaganda masterpiece, he says about last year's scrutiny of the party's anonymous social media accounts.

It was ahead of the EU election last year that Kalla Fakta revealed that the Sweden Democrats' communications department ran anonymous accounts. Then, Åkesson called the scrutiny a "domestic influence operation".

According to the Sweden Democrats' own subsequent election analysis, the party failed to mobilize voters by criticizing the scrutiny, but rather that it may have negatively affected the confidence in individual representatives.

According to Åkesson, the party no longer has any anonymous accounts.

We do not intend to start any new such accounts either, because it is a grey area, I think it is an unnecessary debate and it is better that we do not engage in it, he says to the radio.

In a statement to SVT News, Kalla Fakta's responsible publisher Fredrick Malmberg writes that it is "regrettable and disturbing when the leader of one of Sweden's largest parties compares Kalla Fakta's revelations with Nazi propaganda".

He believes that the parallel is "incomprehensible" and means that Åkesson is trying to downplay the in-depth and independent journalism.

"That the Sweden Democrats' party leader has the same disturbing rhetoric a year after the award-winning revelation shows, in my opinion, deep contempt for the media's role in our democratic society.", Malmberg writes to SVT.
