Air India plane that crashed shortly after takeoff in India last week had not had any previous problems, says Chairman Natarajan Chandrasekaran to the Indian news site Time Now.

There is much speculation and many different theories. But as far as I know, the specific aircraft, AI-171, had a problem-free background, he says.

One of the two engines on board the plane was also newly installed.

The right engine was new and was installed in March 2025. The left engine was serviced last in 2023 and was to undergo the next maintenance check in December 2025, continues Chandrasekaran.

Only one person survived and 279 people died in the plane crash in the Indian city of Ahmedabad last week.
