AIK's record miss: "Nice to get rid of the burden"

AIK did not break the winning record in Hockeyallsvenskan. Jumbo Östersund won with 3-2 at Hovet and AIK's winning streak stopped at 16 straight matches. Nice to get rid of that burden, says coach Roger Melin according to Aftonbladet.

It is the second time in just over two years that Östersund is putting an end to a record streak in Hockeyallsvenskan. In December 2022, Modo, now in SHL, was defeated at home with 5–3 when the Örnsköldsvik team was chasing its 17th consecutive win.

Then, Modo had equaled Timrå's record of 16 consecutive wins from the 2020–2021 season. Now it was AIK's turn to lose in the same situation.

Östersund went ahead to a 2–0 lead within barely four minutes into the first period. Linus Videll, who previously played for AIK at both youth and senior levels, scored one of the goals. In the third period, the 39-year-old forward veteran became the match hero when he scored 3–2 after AIK had caught up from a 0–2 deficit.

The home team was chasing a tie and overtime in the final minutes. But the goal did not come and the streak stopped at 16 consecutive wins.

Nice to get rid of that burden. It's the only thing people talk about. Now we can focus on something else, says AIK coach Roger Melin according to Aftonbladet.

After the match, boos and whistles were heard in P4 Radiosporten's broadcast from the Hovet arena in Stockholm. It was unclear who or what they were directed at. Several AIK supporters stood and applauded their home team after the match.

Last week, AIK equaled Timrå's and Modo's previous record by winning 2–1 away against Karlskoga.

Corrected: In an earlier version, incorrect information was provided about the boos.
