Swedish football club AIK fires coach Mikkjal Thomassen. "By choosing to change head coach now, we believe the team and the club will be better with a different leader in the coming years," says Fredrik Söderberg, the club director and CEO.

Mikkjal Thomassen took over in the summer of 2024 and AIK states on its website that the Faroese coach led the men's team in a total of 55 competitive matches.

"I will always be an AIK supporter and carry the club in my heart. I look forward to coming back as one of you to support the club and the team. Good luck with the new head coach and the whole team," says Thomassen.

The club has not announced a replacement and says that the current coaching staff will lead the first training session of the year on Wednesday. Morten Kalvenes and Nils Heingård have been assistant coaches under Thomassen.

Last season, AIK finished in seventh place in the Swedish league.
