AI Stocks Lifted the Nasdaq and S&P 500 as Apple Shares Fell After Results

The New York Stock Exchange was mostly subdued on Tuesday, as several AI-related stocks had a good day. But Apple shares fell after the company’s quarterly report.

At the close, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 0.4 percent. The broad S&P 500 index rose 0.4 percent, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite rose 0.8 percent.

Apple, the world's second-most valuable listed company, fell 1.9 percent after reporting quarterly results on Monday evening. Earnings per share and revenue were higher than expected, but results in China lagged.

By contrast, several AI-linked stocks with heavy index weightings rose. Micron, Nvidia, Broadcom and Texas Instruments gained 2.6–3.5 percent.

Industry peer AMD rose 3.7 percent ahead of its quarterly report after the market close.

A barrel of North Sea oil (Brent) was trading at 104.35 in futures, after falling 0.4 percent during the day.
