At the CES trade show in Las Vegas, which recently concluded, concepts for future technology were displayed alongside new versions of computers, phones and televisions.
Below are some of the most eye-catching gadgets of the future.
AI companion
Strictly speaking, AI assistants aren't exactly new. But several companies, including gaming company Razer and Lepro, are investing heavily in anime-inspired AI assistants that fit in a small device next to your computer. The idea is that the companion will help you with both gaming and everyday life.
Pet-friendly smart animals
Another not entirely new trend that received plenty of additions at this year's fair was smart animals. Smart in the sense that they are technological products rather than flesh and blood. Many are linked to health applications. This includes the AI panda Anan. If you pat the panda, it registers the interaction, which the developers say could potentially be rewarding for elderly people or those with cognitive difficulties. The panda can also remind elderly users when it's time to take medication.
Candy canes that play music
Among the more bizarre items at CES is a candy lollipop that also doubles as a speaker. The product is still in development, but according to the company behind it, it works by vibrating from your jaw up to your ear, allowing you to hear a song while you munch on the lollipop. R&B artist Akon is one of several artists involved in the project.
Sound and light in miniature format
Are your Lego buildings missing sound effects when the plane you built swoops through the clouds? Not for long. Lego has shown off a "smart" Lego piece that adds both light and sound to various buildings. The piece reacts to how you play with it and what you build. Initially, the piece will be launched in conjunction with "Star Wars" Lego.
Replaceable AI board
Whether AI art is real art or just plagiarism is a separate discussion. Soon you will at least have a painting on your wall that you can talk to to change the motif, provided you pay a subscription fee.
