At the close, the Dow Jones industrial average had fallen 0.3 percent, the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite index fell 0.6 percent and the broad S&P 500 index lost 0.5 percent.
This weekend, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei wrote a post on the company's website in which he called for a joint slowdown in AI technology, citing recent rapid developments, a view backed by other industry leaders such as OpenAI's Sam Altman and entrepreneur and billionaire Elon Musk.
Several AI-related stocks also fell on Monday, including Nvidia, down 3.4 percent, and Broadcom, down 4.8 percent.
