The Shanghai and Shenzhen stock exchanges are down 0.7 percent and 0.4 percent, respectively.
At lunchtime, Japan's Topix was down 1 percent while the Nikkei 225 was down 0.7 percent.
South Korea's Kospi is defying the decline and is up 0.3 percent this morning.
