Almgren becomes the first non-African runner in 30 years to win gold in a half marathon. The last was Italian Stefano Baldini in 1996.
It feels so good. First becoming European champion and then coming here with the clear goal of taking the gold and delivering in this way. It feels incredibly good, Almgren tells SVT.
It was a long time between Almgren and Kipkorir, and towards the end they took turns holding first and second place - before Almgren put in an overdrive and sprinted to the finish.
“The bad bastard”
"It was so big, this. I felt fresh until there was a kilometer left. A good feeling," says Almgren and continues:
It's nice to run in a way like this where you don't have to do anything yourself but can be that big bastard who is behind and sprints, he says.
Andreas Almgren also broke his old record from last year by half a minute.
When there were 200 meters left, I gave it everything I had and then he (Kipkorir) had nothing to counter.
No hard celebration
This is Almgren's third major championship medal of his career. He has previously won a World Championship bronze and recently became European champion in the 10,000 meters in Birmingham.
Almgren has previously talked about making a move towards marathons in the future, probably after the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. Now preparations are also underway for the New York Marathon in early November.
I'll try to find some kind of celebration. But I'm leaving for training camp in the US tomorrow, so it probably won't be a big celebration.
On the women's side, Kenyan Agnes Jebet Ngetich set a new world record.
Ngetich finished in 1:05:15 - one second off the previous record. Ngetich led the race from start to finish.
