The 89 tunnel sections were due to be driven out and lowered into the Fehmarn Belt in summer 2024. But approval from the Danish Maritime Authority for the newly built special vessels was delayed and has only now been granted, the developer Sund & Bælt states in a press release.
It is a giant puzzle, with tunnel elements over 200 meters long that will be lowered and joined together with great precision on the bottom of the strait.
The new connection is due to open in about five years, and is expected to almost halve the travel time from Malmö and Copenhagen to Hamburg.
