The Spaniards' World Championship in Qatar 2022 ended already in the round of 16, when Morocco advanced after penalties.

After the fiasco, Luis Enrique had to leave the role as national team captain.

As a replacement, the Spanish Football Association chose to promote Luis de la Fuente from the U21 national team.

A decision that yielded results.

The 63-year-old led the national team to victory in the Nations League 2023 and the following year the national team won the European Championship final against England.

Now Luis de la Fuente has been given a contract extension.

"He will continue as national team captain over the European Championship 2028", the association writes in a statement.
