It was in October 2023 that the tragic accident occurred. The event, which took place during a match between Nottingham Panthers and Sheffield Steelers, quickly became a world news story.
An investigation was launched and subsequently, a man, whose name is not public, was arrested on suspicion of manslaughter.
Now, Matt Petgrave, whose skate was the one that hit Johnson's neck, has started a public fundraising campaign to cover "some of his legal costs".
"On October 28, 2023, I was involved in a tragic accident that resulted in the death of ice hockey player Adam Johnson. A police investigation is ongoing and the legal process has been long and challenging," says Petgrave in a statement, continuing:
"I am now seeking help to cover some of my legal costs while I am subject to police bail, as well as any potential costs if the case goes to court."
The fundraising campaign has so far raised almost 10,000 pounds, equivalent to approximately 138,000 kronor.
"Initially, I had insurance coverage, but without me having done anything wrong, this has been terminated."
Adam Johnson had a past in Malmö Redhawks, where he played 21 matches in the 2020/21 season.
