Cristiano Ronaldo saw red – and risks being suspended in Portugal's first World Cup match.

Portugal lost to Ireland 0-2 on Thursday, but still has a good chance of reaching the World Cup finals next year.

Superstar Cristiano Ronaldo had a tough night that ended with him elbowing Dara O'Shea in the back and being sent off by Swedish referee Glenn Nyberg.

Before the 40-year-old left the field, he ironically applauded the Irish supporters and exchanged a few words with Ireland's national team captain Heimir Hallgrimsson.

"He congratulated me for putting pressure on the referee. But it was his actions on the pitch that got him the red card. It had nothing to do with me – unless I got into his head," Hallgrimsson said, according to the BBC.

Ronaldo is automatically suspended when Portugal finishes the World Cup qualifiers at home against Armenia on Sunday (victory secures a World Cup spot).

If the superstar is suspended further, he will miss Portugal's eventual World Cup debut next summer.
