The new version of the 1980s musical was initially a hit with audiences in New York's theater district, but the final performance will be on June 21 - three months earlier than expected, writes Deadline.

Since star Lea Michele (known for the TV series “Glee”) announced in June that she was dropping out of the musical, ticket sales have plummeted. According to Deadline, the production, which premiered in November, will be a loss for its investors.

“Chess” flopped when it was first staged on Broadway in 1988, but the new production received five Tony Award nominations.
