It was during a training session on Tuesday that the 24-year-old Belgian – who in Paris became the first cyclist to win both the time trial and road race at an Olympic Games – cycled into a door on a postal van.
"I was operated on last night and everything went well", writes Evenepoel on social media on Wednesday.
He reports that he sustained fractures in his ribs, shoulder blade, and a hand, as well as injuries to his lung tissue, and that his right collarbone was dislocated, leading to ligament injuries.
He writes that "a long journey awaits", but he is determined to make a comeback.
"The comeback begins now", he writes.
Evenepoel has previously won two World Championship gold medals during his career.
