Ukraine to buy more fighter jets, now from France. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and French President Emmanuel Macron have signed a letter of intent stating that Ukraine may purchase up to 100 Rafale planes with associated weapons and other equipment, French media reports.
The letter of intent, signed during Zelenskyy's visit to an air base outside Paris, is not a formal purchase agreement. It sets out a framework for deals that the two governments want to realize within a ten-year period.
In October, Zelensky signed a similar letter of intent to buy 100 to 150 Swedish Gripen planes. The Ukrainian government has had a stated intention to strengthen the air force with around 250 new planes and has said it is negotiating with Sweden, France and the United States.
