Almgren was 19 seconds ahead of his nearest competitor in the European Championships 10,000m final in Birmingham. He finished in 27:23.50, erasing Finland's Martti Vainio's championship record from 1978.
A few days later he announced that on November 1 he will run 42,195 metres in the New York Marathon.
"And don't worry. I'm not saying goodbye to track running, I'm just saying hello to marathons," he writes.
Almgren also won bronze in the 10,000 metres at the World Championships last year.
