American journalist Anderson Cooper is leaving CBS News' 60 Minutes after almost 20 years with the program, several media outlets report.

"Being a correspondent for '60 Minutes' has been one of the highlights of my career," Cooper wrote in a statement.

In addition to his work on the news program "60 Minutes," Cooper is also a well-known figure on CNN.

"For almost 20 years I've been able to balance my jobs at CNN and CBS, but I have young children now and I want to spend as much time with them as possible, while they still want to spend time with me," he continued.

Cooper has two sons with his partner.
