This has never happened before in Volkswagen's 88-year history, but now it is being forced to close a factory at home in Germany for the first time.

The last car will roll out of the Dresden plant on Tuesday, just over 20 years after the factory opened, the Financial Times reports. Instead, the facility will now be leased to the city's technical university for, among other things, AI development and also serve as a tourist attraction.

The change is a sign of how the German auto industry is being challenged by everything from weak demand in China to tariff issues in the United States.
