An Afghan man is sentenced to life imprisonment for a knife attack at a market meeting during the German election campaign last year. A police officer died.

During the attack, the 26-year-old man also injured five people. The attack took place in May last year at a square in Mannheim in southwestern Germany.

The man is a supporter of the terrorist group IS and was stopped when he was shot by police at the scene. The meeting at the square was held by the organization Pax Europa, which claims to work against an alleged Islamization of Europe. The man is convicted of murder and five cases of attempted murder.

The attack was one in a series of notable knife attacks in Germany with perpetrators from Syria and Afghanistan, which contributed to stricter weapon laws and an infected discussion about asylum reception.
