The AfD member thus becomes the first person from a far-right party to lead a German state parliament since World War II.
The AfD came out on top with almost 44 percent of the vote in the regional elections in Saxony-Anhalt in early September. In Tuesday’s election for state parliament president, the party also received the support of the five members of the far-left BSW party and four others - paving the way for the AfD to later secure majority support for a new state government.
