It was on Thursday afternoon that the leak in a large water pipe supplying Örnsköldsvik and nearby areas with drinking water was discovered, reports Örnsköldsviks Allehanda.
The levels are dropping sharply in the reservoirs, and the municipal environmental and water utility in Örnsköldsvik, Miva, is now urging residents to use water "smartly and sparingly" as much as possible.
Work to fix the leak is ongoing, but according to Miva, it is being made more difficult by additional leaks in the same area.
Tanks with emergency drinking water have begun to be put in place.
