Acute Blood Shortage in Skåne: "Very Low Stocks"

The past few weeks have seen an acute blood shortage in Skåne, reports P4 Malmöhus.

The shortage may in the worst case lead to operations being postponed or cancelled.

We have been on very low levels of plus and zero minus, so we really need to get it up a bit more, says Jonna Rimmerfeldt, responsible for a blood donor trailer in Trelleborg, to the radio channel.

Now it looks a bit better, but we still need many, many more to have a safe stock.

There is also an acute blood shortage in the Västra Götaland region. Here, the region has appealed to blood donors, particularly those with Rh- blood, to give blood.

Blood can only be stored for six weeks and the hospital needs a stock of blood to be able to maintain preparedness for trauma and disaster situations. Blood is needed, among other things, in accidents, cancer treatments, and difficult births.

Summer holidays and travel abroad lead to fewer people giving blood during the summer.
