Drownings, electric shocks, sexual assault and abnormally high death rates. A report from the UN Committee against Torture sharply criticizes Israel's treatment of Palestinian prisoners.

The conclusions in the report are based on information from, among other things, the Israeli government as well as Israeli and international organizations, according to the newspaper Haaretz .

According to the report, which was released on Friday, Palestinian prisoners are subjected to degrading punishments, torture with sexual elements, substandard sanitary conditions and a systematic refusal to provide medical care to prisoners.

The committee also determines that prison guards who commit the abuses are not being tried by Israel, which the country is obliged to do under international law.

In the report, the committee writes that the deterioration of the conditions of the Palestinian detainees is “a deliberate state policy of collective punishment” and that the torture “constitutes war crimes and crimes against humanity, and forms part of the criminal intent of genocide.”
