Åberg didn't have the margins on his side during the final round at Royal Birkdale. He recorded bogeys on the third and seventh holes and then lost his sense of control.
The Swede played some very good golf at times, with a number of nice tee shots and approaches, but the putts didn't want to go in this afternoon. Time after time the putts went to the edge of the hole, but stayed on the green.
"I think I hit okay shots every now and then, but I didn't get close enough to the pins to get any really good birdie chances. Relying on sinking 10-metre putts is quite difficult in the long run," Åberg told Aftonbladet.
He did make birdies on the ninth and 17th holes, but was never in the fight for victory.
“Relatively satisfied”
Åberg's finish summed up the day very well as his par putt went right to the edge of the hole - again. The effort was enough for a shared ninth place overall.
Overall, I'm relatively happy with how I played, but I would definitely like to do it a little better.
Alex Norén finished the competition with a 68, two under par, and finished -3 overall. It was enough for a shared 18th place.
The Swede was very satisfied with the finish.
The first time in a very long time I've felt like I have the game under control. I'm incredibly happy with most of the shots and 90 percent of the game. I think the putting is also starting to come together, says Norén to Viaplay.
Dramatic ending
The battle for victory was truly dramatic. American Cameron Young started the day in 19th place, but rolled in birdie after birdie and finished the day six under par and nine under overall.
Then he had to sit in the clubhouse and watch player after player come in with a worse final score. The wait lasted a couple of hours before it was Ryan Fox's turn.
The New Zealander trailed Young for a long time, but moved into a shared lead on the 16th hole. After par on the 17th, he took a chance on the final hole with a drive that stopped about five metres from the hole.
Without showing any nerves, he stepped onto the green and sank the putt to win. Fox is only the second player from New Zealand to win the British Open.
